The US restricts the entry of five Cuban officials due to the 11J protests

(EFE).- The Government of the United States announced this Thursday that it has taken measures to impose restrictions on the visas of five unidentified Cuban officials due to their links with the trials and the imprisonment of protesters in the protests of July 11, 2021 in the island.

In a statement, the Department of State headed by Antony Blinken announced the sanctions, which respond to Presidential Proclamation 5377, by which the US can suspend the entry into the country of officials and employees of the Cuban Government.

According to the statement, these five officials are linked to “the unfair trials” and the sentencing and imprisonment of Cuban protesters who took to the streets on July 11, 2021.

The US government denounced that the Cuban authorities “deny citizens their basic human rights and fundamental freedoms.”

The event occurred almost at the same time that the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) published a new statement in which it reported four firm sentences against 33 participants of 11J who had appealed.

Among the appeals of La Güinera, a total of 206 years in prison were confirmed, with individual cases of up to 17 years

Of these, “30 were sentenced to imprisonment (20 between five and ten years, and 10 between ten and 18 years), while two were subsidized for correctional work without internment and one for limitation of liberty.”

The sentences were notified on June 14 and 15 and corresponded to people convicted of sedition, sabotage and public disorder in Havana and Mayabeque.

One of the appeals reduced the sentences of up to 15 years in prison for 17 people who demonstrated in the Havana neighborhood of La Güinerabut the sentences were so harsh that, likewise, they leave a high number of years in prison, a total of 206 years in prison with individual cases of up to 17 years.

As reported by the Prosecutor’s Office three days ago, the country’s courts have issued 76 firm sentences against 381 people for the protests, not counting those that have been announced this Thursday.

The NGO Prisoners Defenders pointed out on June 8 that a total of 168 protesters have been prosecuted solely for the crime of sedition. And that 246 have firm prison sentences of 10 years or more.
