The US restricts the entry of Cuban migrants across the border

Cubanos, miedo creíble

MIAMI, United States. — The United States government announced this Thursday that it will restrict the entry of Cuban, Haitian and Nicaraguan migrants who try to enter illegally through the border with Mexico.

The White House highlighted in a release that the measure seeks to stop the migratory wave that the country is facing, but, in turn, creating a new procedure is “orderly, safe and humane” that “will substantially reduce” the number of people trying to access US territory illegally .

In this sense, the Biden administration plans to launch a program that will facilitate the orderly entry into the United States of more than 30,000 migrants from Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua.

It should be noted that these slots can only be filled by those who have a financial sponsor who lives in the United States, as well as the relevant security checks. Once this process is completed, migrants will be able to live and work in the country for up to two years.

Under the new policy, the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will empower border officials to expeditiously remove people who attempt to enter the country without permission, without a legal basis to remain and cannot be removed under Title 42.

With the new regulations, migrants who are expeditiously removed from the US will be subject to expedited expulsion to their respective countries of origin and a re-entry ban for five years.

“Don’t show up at the border. Stay where you are and apply (for access) legally. (…) If your application is approved, you will be able to enter. If it is denied or you try to cross into the United States illegally, you will not be allowed access,” Biden said Thursday.

The Biden administration noted that DHS and the Department of Justice will announce today their intent to propose a new rule that would encourage people to seek orderly and legal paths of migration and reduce overcrowding along the Southwest border and pressure on the immigration system.

The newspaper The Wall Street Journal notes that “the new policy represents the broadest effort the Biden administration has undertaken thus far to deter immigrants seeking asylum from crossing the border illegally.”
