The Department of Homeland Security of the United States (DHS, for its acronym) announced that migrants —including Venezuelans— who wish to enter the United States from Mexico will be able to schedule appointments to present their cases and request asylum through the CBP One cell phone application. .
Any non-U.S. national who is in central or northern Mexico with the intention of traveling to the United States can use the CBP One app to submit advance travel information and schedule an appointment to appear at ports of entry. land entrances to the southwestern border of the United States.
Those who request the appointment must attest that they meet certain vulnerability criteria required by the United States government to receive migrants, for which humanitarian situations are especially taken into account, and must be prepared to corroborate their statements during the audience.
Thanks to this application, the US government hopes that the immigration process will be more orderly and safe, in addition to having expectations that many migrants will stop choosing to cross the border without authorization.

Through the application, users can request an exception to the Title 42 Order, a regulation applied by the United States during mobility restrictions due to covid-19 that empowers federal officials to expel migrants. Appointments can be requested up to 14 days in advance at eight border points located in Nogales (Arizona), Brownsville, Eagle Pass, Hidalgo, Laredo and El Paso (Texas); in addition to Calexico and San Ysidro (California).

When the Title 42 Order is lifted, anyone will be able to use the app to make an appointment, show up for inspection, and start a protection request, thus avoiding going to a port of entry and staying there until the request is approved or denied.
The Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, declared that this measure is aimed at all non-citizens of the United States who believe they meet the necessary conditions to receive asylum in the North American country.
“The CBP One app is an innovative solution that we are using to facilitate the safe and orderly arrival of non-citizens who believe they meet certain vulnerability criteria and request a humanitarian exception to the Title 42 Order,” he stated.
