The US believes there is a high risk of its citizens being unlawfully detained in Venezuela and that it cannot have access to them if something happens to them. It recommended that those who remain in the country leave as soon as possible and contact a diplomatic mission.

The U.S. Department of State updated its travel alert for Venezuela on Tuesday, September 24, reminding its citizens not to travel to the country because it is considered a danger to them due to the “high risk of unjust detention, terrorism, kidnapping, arbitrary application of local laws, crime, civil unrest, and poor health infrastructure.”

In the text, released in social networksThe United States recalls that in 2019, it withdrew all diplomatic personnel from Venezuela and suspended its operations following the breaking off of diplomatic relations and therefore can no longer provide emergency assistance to its citizens, urging them to leave the country and contact an embassy or consulate outside the territory.

For American diplomacy, there is a high risk of unlawful detention of US citizens, recalling that they have spent up to five years in prison and remembering that they receive no notification of this and cannot have access.

This new US alert is generated after the Minister of Interior and Justice, Diosdado Cabelloreported that security and intelligence officials seized more than 400 rifles. He said that the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and sectors of the Venezuelan opposition are behind the illegal entry of these and other weapons, which would be used to carry out alleged plans to create hotbeds of violence.

On September 14, Cabello explained that the weapons entered Venezuela through regular channels, including in dog food packaging.

“In the end, all of this results in threats against the country. It is an operation carried out by people who are used to it. The United States government is not immune to this operation. Behind this operation is Ivan Simonovis,” he said from the headquarters of the Ministry of Interior and Justice.

Although he did not specify how many people have been arrested in connection with the case, he said that one of those arrested was Wilbert Joseph Castañeda, an American national who was said to be an active military officer.
