The US imposes sanctions on Colombia and closes visa services in Bogotá

Colombia Visas EEUU

All people who approach the United States diplomatic headquarters in Bogotá, Colombia this Monday, January 27, will find that the visa service is not provided. In this way and with other additional measures such as the increase in tariffs on Colombian products, the Trump government responds to President Petro’s refusal to allow military planes with deported migrants to enter.

In response to the refusal of Colombian President Gustavo Petro to accept two flights with Colombian deportees, his American counterpart Donald Trump announced this Sunday, January 26, a series of reprisals against the South American country; among them, immediate revocation of visas for Colombian government officials and 25% tariffs on all products made in the neighboring country.

In a publication on the Truth Social social network, Trump said that he ordered a travel ban and immediate revocation of visas for Colombian government officials. visa sanctions on all members of the ruling Colombia Humana party, as well as “relatives and supporters of the Colombian Government.”

Trump said that Petro’s refusal to land these flights endangered the national and public security of the United States.

«These measures are just the beginning. “We will not allow the Colombian Government to violate its legal obligations regarding the acceptance and return of the criminals they forced into the United States!” Trump said.

Trump also ordered the imposition of “emergency” 25% tariffs on all Colombian products entering the United States and “sanctions on the treasury, banking and finance.”

“In one week, 25% tariffs will rise to 50%,” said the president, who also ordered to redouble inspections of all Colombian nationals and shipments of merchandise coming from the country.

Earlier, the North American State Department informed Colombian media that the United States Embassy in that country will close the visa section this Monday, January 27.

President Petro immediately responded to this decision by his counterpart Donald Trump, by pointing out that in Colombia there are also North American citizens living irregularly, and that for this reason he has never intended to carry out a mass deportation from his country.

«North American citizens who wish can be in Colombia, I believe in human freedom. But more than 15,666 are irregular and by Colombian laws they must regularize their stay. You will never see me burning a gringo flag or doing a ‘ratzia’ to return illegals in handcuffs to the United States. True libertarians will never attack human freedom. “We are the opposite of the Nazis,” Petro stated in a message written on the social network X.

Likewise, sources from the US State Department indicated that the objective was to deport “80 Colombians on each flight, 160 in total,” of people in an irregular situation in their territory.

Thus, all people who approach the United States diplomatic headquarters in Bogotá this Monday will find that the service is not provided, regardless of the type of visa required or the urgency of traveling to said country.

The administration of President of the United States Donald Trump took the measure after the President of Colombia Gustavo Petro, stated this Sunday on his X account, in the early hours of the morning, that he prevented the entry into the country of North American military planes with undocumented migrants. deported and said that he will only receive them on civil flights and when they are treated with “dignity.”

“A migrant is not a criminal and must be treated with the dignity that a human being deserves. That is why I had the US military planes that came with Colombian migrants returned,” the Colombian president wrote on the X network.

Petro had previously authorized the flights and they had been approved at the highest levels of the government.
