The Summit of the Americas organized by the United States has generated controversy, even before the event begins in Los Angeles, due to the White House’s initial position of not inviting countries like Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba to the hemispheric meeting.
This has generated discomfort in several nations of the hemisphere, which was initially verbalized by Mexico through its president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who has conditioned his presence at the Summit of the Americas if there is no invitation to Managua, Havana and Caracas. ; a position that was emulated by Bolivian President Luis Arce.
Argentina and Chile, for their part, have advocated a more plural Summit but said they would attend the meeting. The White House had said in recent days that it was evaluating the possibility of inviting Cuba to the hemispheric event. However, President Miguel Díaz-Canel, who will host the Summit of the Bolivarian Alliance of the Countries of Our America (ALBA) on Friday, May 27, stated on Wednesday, May 25, that he will not attend “in any case.” to the Summit of the Americas.
“It is known that the Government of the United States conceived from the beginning that the Summit of the Americas would not be inclusive. It was his intention to exclude several countries, including Cuba, despite the strong regional demand that the exclusions be ended,” the president wrote on Twitter.
He also expressed on that social network that there have been “intense efforts” and “brutal pressure” from the US against those who have resisted going to that event or made a complaint.

It must be remembered that the Venezuelan president, Nicolás Maduro, after several days of being silent on the matter, recently spoke about the Summit of the Americas. Secured Tuesday May 24 that the United States “is afraid of the anti-imperialist voice of Venezuela” when referring to the country’s exclusion from that regional event.
The president assured that Venezuela’s non-invitation to the international congress is due to “ideological reasons.”
This Thursday, May 26, the journalist of the Voice of America, Jorge Agobián, published a message on social networks stating that it is official that the US would not invite Venezuela to the Summit of the Americas. Along with the message, there is an accompanying video in which Senator Marco Rubio and Kevin O’Reilly, coordinator of the summit in the United States, participate, in which Rubio rebukes him with several questions.
Rubio asks if anyone from the Cuban regime has been invited to the meeting, and O’Reilly merely answers that it is a White House decision to issue the invitations. Given the repeated response, Rubio changes the strategy and asks if Juan Guaidó is recognized as president of Venezuela and if he has been invited to the Summit.
O’Reilly says that Washington does indeed recognize Guaidó as president and that they have been in ongoing talks with him. However, he only limited himself to saying that it is the White House that decides who goes to the Summit of the Americas and who does not.
Marco Rubio asked if President Nicolás Maduro was invited to that meeting and the organizer Kevin O’Reilly said “absolutely not” because we do not recognize them as a sovereign government. He took the opportunity to ask if he was invited to Nicaragua, to which the organizer of the summit responded with a resounding no.

Meanwhile, the Caricom countries – which have been discussing for days whether or not to go to the Summit of the Americas – reached a consensus in which they asked that the ninth edition of the hemispheric event be an event that includes all countries.
Caricom published on Wednesday, May 25, in its internet address, a statement on the twenty-fifth meeting of the Council on Foreign and Community Relations (Cofcor, in English) of that organization in which reference is made to the meeting in Los Angeles.
The meeting, which took place on May 18, was the setting for this request and also notes that relations between Caricom and the United States have been revitalized with a series of high-level meetings between the two parties, including the dialogue held with the US Vice President, Kamala Harris.
