MADRID, Spain.- During the first half of fiscal year 2022, the United States government granted 6,021 immigrant visas for Cubans. This figure doubles those granted throughout the previous year. In 2021 around 3,000 visas were granted and in 2020 around 4,000.

Data from the Office of Consular Affairs of the Department of State to which he had access CyberCuba, indicate that at the end of last March the number of immigrant visas granted to Cubans increased by 47 percent compared to 2021. Of these, 4,306 were processed in the last three months.

This increase is due to a greater number of scheduled appointments at the United States embassy in Guyana, as well as the expansion of officials at said consular headquarters.

In addition, for Cubans who had been granted an appointment during 2021 and could not attend due to COVID-19, the entity managed to reschedule them.

In the current month, the United States Embassy in Georgetown expanded the ability of doctors panelists in charge of immigration medical examinations. These exams are a requirement for the processing of visas for Cubans.

The resumption of the consular services of the United States Embassy in Cuba starting next May will be another fundamental factor that will help speed up the granting of visas.

As recently reported by the diplomatic headquarters, the procedures will begin in a limited way with the processing of IR-5 visas, which allow American citizens 21 years of age or older to request that their parents emigrate to the United States.

Last Thursday, officials from the United States and the Cuban regime They met in Washington DC to discuss the implementation of the Migratory Agreements between the northern nation and the Island.

After the meeting, the US Department of State stated: “Allowing safe, legal and orderly migration between Cuba and the United States continues to be a mutual interest between both countries and is consistent with the interests of the United States in promoting family reunification and promote greater respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms in Cuba”.
