EE. UU. detiene a 44 balseros cubanos en Cayos de Florida y deporta a otros 192

MIAMI, United States. — The number of Cuban rafters who arrive daily in the Florida Keys continues to increase with the passing of the days. This Wednesday, the United States Border Patrol reported 44 migrants from the Island who were intercepted in different operations carried out in the area.

According to Chief Patrol Agent Walter N. Slosar, among the nationals of the Caribbean island who were detained there were 38 adults and six minors.

“U.S. Border Patrol agents with the support of local partners responded to multiple landings of migrants in the Florida Keys and encountered 44 Cuban migrants,” the officer said on his Twitter profile.

This Wednesday also reported the deportation of 192 Cuban rafters who tried to reach South Florida illegally and who were returned to the island by the Resolute coast guard crew.

A release published by the US Coast Guard indicates that the migrants had been detained in 13 different operations that took place between Thursday and Saturday of last week.

Most of the migrants were detected by US authorities trying to reach Cayos Marquesas and Dry Tortugas.

“The Coast Guard and our partners are patrolling Marquesas Key and Dry Tortugas to stop illegal landings on the national wildlife refuge and national park islands. Those detained at sea will be repatriated to their country of origin or departure,” said Lieutenant Travis Poulos, of the Seventh District of the Coast Guard, in statements collected by that agency.

Since last October 1 (beginning of fiscal year 2023) to date, 2,723 Cuban rafters have been intercepted, almost half of the total number of migrants detained and deported between October 2021 and September 2022.
