The US describes the visit of the president of Iran in Latin America as “destabilizing behavior”

John Kirby, advisor to the United States Security Council and spokesman for the State Department, reacted to the visit that Ebrahim Raisi, president of Iran, made to Venezuela, Nicaragua and later to Cuba. He considered it “destabilizing behavior.”

“We are deeply concerned by the Iranian regime’s intentions to expand its malign influence in the Western Hemisphere and to undermine democracy and security in Latin America,” Kirby told a news conference.

Kirby urged countries in the region to “reject Iran’s destabilizing activities” and “support international efforts to restore peace and stability in the Middle East.” In addition, he noted that the United States will continue to monitor Iran’s destabilizing behavior in the region.

“I can’t talk about the agenda or what he’s doing or who he’s going to meet with. Are we concerned about Iran’s destabilizing behavior? Of course. And we have taken and will continue to take steps to mitigate that behavior,” the security adviser stated.

“Matter of National Security”

Regarding the visit that Ebrahim Raisi makes to the nations under dictatorship, Kirby also added that the United States is not going to “ask the countries of this hemisphere or any other, with whom they have to associate or who they are going to allow to visit: we we focus on our own national security interests in the region.”

On the other hand, the president of Iran travels with a large cabinet, including a high official of the armed forces of that country, which has caused suspicion among opponents of the regimes.
