MIAMI, United States. — The United States government could extend the application of Title 42 to migrants from Cuba, Haiti and Nicaragua, the agency reported today. Reuters.
This is a regulation that was implemented under the mandate of the Trump administration in March 2020 and that empowers border authorities to quickly expel migrants without the possibility of them being able to request political asylum.
According to the British media, the official announcement could come this Thursday when President Joe Biden delivers a speech on the issue of border security.
Likewise, the Democratic president could announce new higher quotas for immigrants from these countries, sources assured Reuters.
Biden plans to give a speech on border security this morning and is expected to visit the US-Mexico border next week for the first time since taking office in January 2021.
Currently, Title 42 is being applied to migrants from Mexico, Venezuela and some Central American countries. However, the regulations are still not being applied to Cubans, Haitians and Nicaraguans, who continue to flee their respective countries en masse.
Until today, Cubans who entered through the border were detained and processed by the immigration authorities. In some cases, the migrants were released on parole, while in others they received the I-220A form.
From October 2021 to November 2022 they had entered through the southern border of the United States 284,431 Cubansaccording to figures published by the Office of Customs and Border Protection (CBP, for its acronym in English).
This is the largest migratory exodus recorded in the history of Cuba, which has also been replicated in the Straits of Florida, where almost 10,000 Cubans have been detained by US protection agencies.
