The US calls for dialogue in Venezuela led by the opposition and before January 10

US calls for no more repression in Venezuela

Francisco Palmieri, head of the US mission to Venezuela, highlighted the urgency of opening more democratic spaces in the country. He maintained that the United States will establish more sanctions at the appropriate times.

The US head of mission for Venezuela, Francisco Palmieri, maintained that January 10 is a very important milestone for the national situation.

«For this reason, we must begin a dialogue led by the democratic opposition that won the most votes on July 28. And Nicolás Maduro must recognize that and begin a process where the sides can talk about how to reach January 10 in the best position to continue opening political spaces, instead of closing them,” the US official said this Monday, October 7, in an interview. with VPItv.

Likewise, Palmieri highlighted the urgency of opening more democratic spaces in Venezuela.

The Unitary Platform, together with the presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia and the opposition leader María Corina Machado decided that the democratic opposition would not attend the beginning of the dialogue called by Jorge Rodríguez, president of the National Assembly (AN) of 202o: the process was decided unilaterally, without guarantees and within the framework of a repressive wave.

On the other hand, the head of mission said that the US has asked Foreign Minister Yván Gil to visit its citizens imprisoned in the country and that consular access must be authorized “in order to specify, find out and confirm the situation in which they are. ». He added that, without this possibility, it is difficult to really know what status these Americans are in.

Likewise, Palmieri recalled that three weeks ago the US imposed personal sanctions on those responsible for the “brutal repression” unleashed in Venezuela after the presidential elections, as well as officials of the CNE and the TSJ.

“We are going to continue evaluating and taking into account those who are responsible for the situation,” he added. He maintained that the United States will impose more sanctions at the appropriate times, “apart from coordination with other countries” on this type of measures.
