The US backed the Venezuelan Parliament and the extension of the term to Guaidó

The Venezuelan opposition held a session on Monday in which extended for one more year the period of the opposition leader Juan Guaidó as the head of the country’s presidency and days before, the National Assembly had extended its own period which is in effect from 2015..

Although the decision has been criticized and even Nicolas Maduro claimed they were talking about the government of Narnia, now him United States Department of State stated that it continues to recognize the Assembly elected democratically and in turn Guaidó as “interim president.”

The body’s spokesperson, Ned price, stated that he welcomes the decision and that they continue to support the Venezuelan people in their aspiration for “a peaceful reestablishment democracy through free and fair elections ”.

In the statement, it adds that the repression, human rights abuses and restrictions imposed by Mature lead to Venezuela democratic self-determination no longer exists. That is why they call that leader to resume negotiations in Mexico in good faith and for the benefit of the people.

What’s more U.S states that it will continue to work with international partners to achieve the release of political prisoners, the independence of the parties and the Respect for human rights as well as freedom of expression.
