The US request, which has the consent of the defense of both defendants, seeks to avoid “agenda conflicts and logistical problems”
The United States Government requested this Monday, February 2, the postponement of the next hearing in the criminal case against Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, citing logistical reasons and the exchange of evidence.
In a letter addressed to Judge Alvin Hellerstein of the Southern District of New York, federal prosecutor Jay Clayton requested that the session, originally scheduled for March 17, be moved to the 26th of that month.
The request, which has the consent of the defense of both accused, seeks to avoid “scheduling conflicts and logistical problems.”
According to the legal document, this additional time is necessary so that the prosecution “can produce the discovery of evidence” and so that the defense has an opportunity to review it and decide what pretrial motions to file.
In early January, Maduro declared himself “an innocent man” of the drug trafficking charges that Donald Trump’s Administration used to justify his capture and transfer to the United States, and said he was a “prisoner of war.”
Maduro is accused in the United States of four federal charges: narcoterrorism conspiracy, conspiracy to import cocaine, possession of machine guns and destructive devices, and conspiracy to possess these same devices in support of criminal activities, as well as to collaborate with criminal organizations classified as terrorist by Washington.
Cilia Flores, for her part, faces charges linked to alleged logistical and financial support operations for the same criminal structure.
