The United States will resume family reunification visa procedures in Cuba

MIAMI, United States. — The United States will resume family reunification visa procedures in Cuba “in early fall,” according to the government of that country.

A release published this Saturday by the White House indicates that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will shortly begin processing family claim cases, and will work with the State Department to begin interviews in Cuba between the months of September and October.

The joint work between both departments “will develop the capacity to consider and process approved applicants, thus contributing to the objectives of the migration agreement during the next two years,” the statement said.

The White House indicated that the Family Reunification Program (CFRP) will provide a safe and orderly path to the United States for certain Cuban beneficiaries of approved family immigrant petitions.

The resumption of the processing of family reunification cases in Havana would allow the United States to approach the figure of 20,000 immigrant visas in the course of this fiscal year.

Statistics from the State Department itself indicate that since October 2021, the northern country has issued a total of 13,656 immigrant visas to Cubans, for an average of 1,517 monthly visas.

The largest number of immigrant visas issued have been in the IR5 category (parents claimed by children with US citizenship), with 4,784. The US has also issued 3,645 FX (Spouse or children of permanent residents) visas, 2 179 of the IR1 category (Foreign citizens who have been married to a US citizen for two years or more) and 2,041 of IR2 type visas (Single children under 21 years of age) and another 542 belonging to the visa lottery program.
