The United States Department of Justice (DoJ) filed a lawsuit on Tuesday against the American company Google for monopoly in the advertising sector“corrupting legitimate competition in the ad-tech industry.”
“Google used anti-competitive, exclusionary and illegal means to eliminate or seriously diminish any threat to its dominance over digital advertising technologies”affirmed the official statement released by the plaintiffs.
Therefore, in this scenario, the Court of the Eastern District of Virginia has been claimed to force the company to spin off part of its advertising business.
“Competition in the ad tech space is broken, for reasons that have not been accidental or inevitable, an industry behemoth, Google, has corrupted legitimate competition from the ad-tech industry engaging in a systematic campaign to seize control of a wide range of high-tech tools used by publishers, advertisers and brokers to facilitate digital advertising,” they added.
In addition, the legal action is shared by the States of Virginia, California, Colorado, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Tennessee, who have accused Google of keeping “at least” 30% of the campaigns they advertise. advertisers on websites, through their advertising technology.
In this sense, the United States has asked the Justice that, “at least” force Google to sell Google Ad Managerincluding its ad server, the Double Click range of tools and the AdX ad trading platform.
This action represents the second lawsuit that the Department of Justice files against Google since in 2020, the agency carried out a judicial process alleging that the company had engaged in monopolistic practices to dominate the Internet search sector, as well as advertising on said searches.
