The United States has returned 1,019 migrants to Cuba in 2021

A total of 1,019 Cubans have been returned to the island this year by the US authorities, according to data offered for Granma this Sunday. The note also makes known the return of other groups from Mexico, the Bahamas, the Cayman Islands and Russia, without specifying the number of people.

On December 24, the United States Coast Guard returned 39 rafters intercepted in various operations to Cuba. One of the groups used “a sport fishing boat stolen from its owner” whose whereabouts are currently unknown. The 39 returned migrants arrived in the coast guard Raymond Evan to the bay of Orozco, in Artemisa.

The first of the interceptions occurred on Sunday, December 19, 10 nautical miles from Stock Island, according to a statement issued by the Coast Guard. A day later and at different times, the authorities stopped three rustic boats near Key West.

Last weekend, another 25 Cuban rafters were detained after making landfall in three different places in Key West, Officer Thomas G. Martin reported on his account on Monday. Twitter. The Border Patrol provided assistance to the migrants, who were reported in good health.

One of these arrivals was caught on video by Cuban artists María Karla Rivero Veloz and Jean Michel Fernández. “We have just seen some rafters who have just arrived, right where the 90-mile buoy from here to Cuba is,” said the actress. The group made up of six rafters, including a 10-year-old girl, said they left Playa Baracoa last Saturday at two in the afternoon.

The Cubans were taken into custody and will be able to request asylum, by demonstrating to an immigration officer that they are afraid of returning to their country. If they convince the judge, they must post a bond. In the best of cases, they are released with a temporary residence permit in the United States known as Parole.

On social networks, the mobilization of black berets for an illegal exit from Playa Baracoa, in the province of Artemisa, was reported on Saturday. René Almaguer uploaded to his Facebook wall a video in which applause is heard after a boat managed to escape. “People jumping to leave Cuba,” said the native of Havana who resides in Tampa, Florida. “They left, I’m glad”, was one of the reactions of the users.

Nothing prevented the abandonment of the island in small boats, Dallann Loraa commented on the images from the municipality of Bauta in the Artemisa province, shared by Almaguer, in which people in civilian clothes are observed carrying machetes.
