The United States expressed concern about the supervision of the Port of Chancay

The United States Government expressed its concern about the situation of the Port of Chancay given the impossibility of its operation being supervised by the Supervisory Body for Investment in Transport Infrastructure for Public Use (Ositran).

Through a statement from the Office of Western Hemisphere Affairs of the Department of State, published on its official account on the social network

In this context, the US government maintained that it supports Peru’s sovereign right to supervise its critical infrastructure and warned that Chinese financing may have implications in terms of national sovereignty.

“We support Peru’s sovereign right to supervise critical infrastructure within its own territory. Let this serve as a warning to the region and the world: cheap Chinese money has a cost in terms of sovereignty,” the message noted.

The ruling comes after the Judiciary resolved that the Port of Chancay cannot be supervised or sanctioned by Ositran, considering that the terminal is private, establishing that said body does not have regulatory jurisdiction over the port.

Following the judicial decision, Cosco Shipping Ports, a company linked to the administration of the terminal, indicated that the ruling recognizes the private nature of the Port of Chancay, a criterion that – as it was pointed out – had already been previously supported by the Constitutional Court. The company stated that the project is being developed in accordance with the current legal framework.

Finally, the United States ambassador to Peru, Bernie Navarro, also referred to the issue in his account on X, where he described the situation as “alarming.”

“This level of looting and predation is alarming,” he said, reinforcing the concern expressed by the US government.
