The industrial fire at the Matanzas Supertanker base, considered the biggest industrial disaster in the history of Cuba, was caused by an electrical discharge, according to the Cuban authorities.
Its extinction took six days, required the technical collaboration and specialized personnel from Mexico and Venezuela, and left 17 dead –among them firefighters and young people who were doing Compulsory Military Service–, more than a hundred injured and millions in material losses.
At that time, the Government of Washington, through the Department of State, offered technical advice to combat the enormous fire that affected four crude oil deposits of 50,000 cubic meters each in the industrial zone, something that the island’s authorities also appreciated. .
