The United States authorizes new flights to Havana

Vuelos, Cuba, Estados Unidos, American Airlines, JetBlue

Madrid Spain.- The United States government will expand flights to Havana by adding 13 weekly flights from American Airlines from Miami and one from JetBlue from Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

As reported on Monday by the US Department of Transportation. (USDOT, for its acronym in English), the start of these flights is scheduled for mid-December next.

So far American Airlines makes six daily flights to Havana and JetBlue three weekly. The latter will fly on Saturdays using 162-seat Airbus A320 aircraft.

Last June, USDOT lifted a series of travel restrictions to the island and ended the ban on US airline flights to Cuban airports located in the provinceswhich had been suspended in December 2019 by order of then President Donald Trump.

On that occasion, the Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, pointed out that the measure was “in support of the Cuban people and for the interests of the foreign policy of the United States.”

In July of this year, the Department of Transportation approved the request of the American Airlines company to resume its operations to several provinces of Cuba. The four destinations chosen by American to restore flights to the interior of the island were Varadero (Matanzas), Santa Clara (Villa Clara), Holguín and Santiago de Cuba.

The recent expansion occurs after the American Airlines and JetBlue airlines disputed the available quotas to establish new trips to Cuba, since the Department of Transportation set a limit of 20 daily round trips to the country’s capital.
