The United States and Spain view with “concern” the violation of human rights in Nicaragua

Spain, the United States and Chile were the main countries that denounced the constant violation of human rights in Nicaragua, during the presentation of the report presented today by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). The countries were “concerned” about the situation that Nicaragua is going through with the aggravation of human rights violations.

«The 190 political opponents, journalists and human rights defenders are serving unjust sentences and are being subjected to psychological violence, they are denied medical care and adequate food. We urge that those who have been arbitrarily detained be released immediately and unconditionally,” the United States demanded before the plenary.

The North American country urges the regime of Daniel Ortega to “end the attacks on civic spaces that include the closure of more than 1,500 Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and the closure of communication spaces and put an end to the escalation of violence and oppression, including the arrest of a bishop to silence the Catholic Church.”

For its part, Spain reiterates that it is “carefully following the situation in Nicaragua, which continues without improvement in the main issues included in the report. We urge Nicaragua to return to the path of civic coexistence under the rule of law and respect for freedom of assembly, expression and association,” said the Spanish representative.

Chile was also concerned about “the profound deterioration of human rights in Nicaragua and its recent international isolation.”

The document presented this Tuesday sets out in detail the serious violations of the civil and political rights of Nicaraguans, the deepening of the political crisis, the isolation of the Daniel Ortega regime from the international community and the absence of a national dialogue; the latter considered by the OHCHR as the most effective solution to improve the crisis in Nicaragua.

The UN High Commissioner, Volker Türk, indicates that Nicaragua’s progressive isolation from the international community and its reluctance to cooperate with international human rights bodies and mechanisms is a matter of great concern.

Given this, Spain demands “the freedom of political prisoners, the cancellation of judicial processes, the restitution of citizen rights and the cessation of repression and violence. Spain also urges the Nicaraguan government to take all necessary steps to ensure compliance with the recommendations issued by the Office of the High Commissioner.
