The United Nations sanctions against Iran for its nuclear program reactivates

UN sanctions against Iran will be restored after the failure of negotiations between several European countries, which require guarantees on the nuclear program, and Tehran, which qualifies the decision illegal

The United Kingdom, France and Germany, the group of countries called E3, activated at the end of August the mechanism called “Snapback”, which allows to restore within 30 days the sanctioning measures that had been raised in 2015 after an agreement on Iran’s nuclear program.

After the approval of the UN Security Council and the failure on Friday, September 26, Russia and China to postpone the deadline, several severe punishments will be restored, ranging from an embargo on weapons to economic measures, unless an unexpected last minute turn occurs.

In protest, Iran called consultations with its ambassadors in France, Germany and the United Kingdom, according to state television.

“Iran’s nuclear climbing, detailed in more than 60 reports of the OIEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) in the last six years, is a threat to peace and security,” said the British ambassador to the UN, Barbara Woodward.

He did not rule out that the sanctions can be raised again “in the future.”

Throughout the week, meetings were multiplied at the highest level outside the UN General Assembly in New York, to try to find a diplomatic solution.

Oiea return

The European triad E3 considers that Tehran has not made “concrete gestures” to reassure the nature of its nuclear program.

They had put three conditions: the resumption of negotiations with the United States, access of the IEA inspectors to Natanz, Fordo and Isfahán nuclear facilities, bombarded in June by Israel and Washington, and a process to ensure enriched uranium reserves.

After suspending his relations with that UN agency following the June attacks, Iran accepted in early September a new cooperation framework with the nuclear body.

According to the OIEA, this week the inspections of some atomic plants have been resumed.

But Iranian Chancellor Abás Araqchi accused Americans and Europeans of “bad faith” and swore that his country “would never give in pressure,” although he also left the door open to negotiations.

Its president, Peseshkian Masud, said Iran would not abandon the Nuclear Non -Repliation Treaty as retaliation.

Iranians consider the process of restoration of sanctions illegal, as well as Russia and China.

Moscow and Beijing unsuccessfully proposed on Friday to the UN Security Council for six months the Iranian nuclear agreement, which expires on October 18, in order to give more opportunities to diplomacy.

“Null and void”

Under these conditions, analysts fear that some countries, in particular Russia, decide to ignore the UN Security Council decision to reimpose sanctions.

A hypothesis that seemed to suggest on Friday the attached ambassador of Moscow to the United Nations, Dmitri Polianski.

“Any attempt to revive the resolutions of the Security Council against Iran, which were in force before 2015, is void and without effect,” he said.

In 2015, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, the United States, Russia and China signed an agreement with Tehran that provided for the supervision of their nuclear activities in exchange for the progressive and conditioned lifting of sanctions.

The United States, during President Donald Trump’s first term, decided in 2018 to retire from the pact and restore his own reprisals.

Now the West suspects again that Iran wants to endow the atomic weapon. Tehran denies it firmly, and defends its right to develop a civil nuclear program.

According to European experts, the Islamic Republic has about 450 kilos of enriched uranium to 60%, an amount that if 90% enriched would give to manufacture between eight and 10 nuclear bombs.

«Iran has never tried or attempt to make an atomic bomb. We do not want nuclear weapons, ”said its president this week before the UN.
