During the next session of the United Nations Committee against Enforced Disappearances (CED), which will take place from March 28 to April 8, this body will highlight the urgent need to eradicate disappearances and combat the impunity that persists in Mexico, while it will adopt its report on the visit it made to the country last year, reported the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

In November, upon concluding its work in Mexican territory, the committee warned that a generalized situation of disappearances continues in the country and that impunity in this crime is almost total and structural. The group of experts met with authorities of the Mexican State, victims, civil society organizations and other relevant actors. He was in at least 12 states and attended exhumations and places of deprivation of liberty.

In its twenty-second period of sessions, the CED will share a video about its visit to Mexico in which -according to the Office of the High Commissioner- the urgent need to eradicate disappearances and combat impunity in the country is highlighted, which reports more than 99 thousand 400 people disappeared.

In this regard, Sofía de Robina Castro, a lawyer from the Miguel Agustín Pro Juárez Human Rights Center, stated that the committee’s new report could include many of the concerns that had been put on the table for 10 years by the UN Working Group on Enforced Disappearances.

It was a first warning of this crisis, but unfortunately it did not serve to take the necessary measures by the authorities, but on the contrary sharpened the problem.

He recalled that when that report was presented, it had been a few years since the so-called war on drug trafficking began, and as soon as the victims began to realize to society that in reality this was generating a series of human rights violations, among them were disappearances in particular..

At that time, he said, the document established concern about militarization, impunity and the forensic backlog, for the number of unidentified bodies.
