MIAMI, United States.- The United Nations (UN) declared this Wednesday that it has offered emergency aid to Cuba after the passage of Hurricane Ian and that it is in contact with the country’s authorities to try to respond to the needs that they identify themselves.

According to a news agency report EFEthe organization assured that “although resources are scarce”, Cuba has already been offered the supply of food and other products that were prepared in advance as the first phase of the response.

Likewise, the United Nations spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, said on Wednesday that the UN is “ready to support additional needs that are identified.”

Dujarric explained that the UN team in Cuba is working with the country’s authorities to analyze the impact of the hurricane and activate the appropriate response mechanisms.

For her part, Courtenay Rattray, the secretary general’s chief of staff, António Guterres, also spoke with the Cuban delegation to the United Nations to convey her concern about the situation on the island, the spokesperson said.

At least two people died on the island due to landslides caused by the passage of Hurricane Ian, which with category three crossed Cuba from south to north at its western end this Tuesday causing serious damage, including an electrical blackout that has left almost the entire country without power since Tuesday night.

The Cuban authorities assure that in the province of Pinar del Río the greatest damages are registered in housing and in tobacco and agricultural production. More than 5 thousand tobacco houses were affected.

Likewise, there is severe damage to the electrical and telephone service, “100% of the clients in the province are without service and it is expected that the restoration may take about a week, although it is not yet possible to specify exactly.”
