The UN encourages the US and Venezuela to "dialogue" and offers them its "good offices"

The UN assured that its “good offices” are always available, despite having “not seen any sign that the parties want it to get involved.” He insisted that they want to ensure that there will be no escalation around Venezuela

This Tuesday, November 18, the United Nations (UN) encouraged the United States and Venezuela to establish a “dialogue” and offered them its “good offices,” despite recognizing that neither party has given any signs of wanting the international organization to “get involved” in their dispute as a mediator.

«Our good offices are always available in any bilateral dispute if both parties want it. “I have not seen any sign that the parties want the UN to get involved, but we certainly encourage dialogue between the US and Venezuela,” said the spokesman for the General Secretariat, Farhan Haq.

Likewise, he responded to questions about the statements of US President Donald Trump, who said he did not rule out an intervention in Venezuela amid the growing military presence and attacks on ships in its vicinity.

«We have made our concerns clear /…). We want to ensure that there is no escalation in or around Venezuela and that all actions comply with the United Nations Charter and international law,” Haq said regarding Trump’s statements.

The spokesperson did not clarify whether the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, has discussed his potential actions in Venezuela with US officials, but expressed willingness to mediate diplomatically taking into account that Nicolás Maduro has expressed a willingness to dialogue.

Trump insisted that he does not rule out options regarding a possible intervention in Venezuelan territory after opening the door on Sunday to “discussions” with Maduro “because Venezuela wants to talk.”

The presidents of Brazil and Mexico, Luis Inácio Lula da Silva and Claudia Sheinbaum, respectively, have expressed their willingness to serve as intermediaries between the United States and Brazil to open dialogue to reduce tensions between both nations.
