The UN Secretary General, António Guterres, condemned this Thursday “any attempt to subvert the democratic order” in Peru after what happened on Wednesday, when President Pedro Castillo declared a state of emergency in a failed movement that ended with his arrest.
Guterres expressed his “concern” about the political situation in the South American country, and called “on the parties to respect the rule of law, as well as to remain calm and refrain from inflaming political tensions,” in a statement issued this morning.
The self-coup announced by Pedro Castillo on Wednesday morning had a very short run: hours after doing so, Congress dismissed him and he was immediately arrested by the Peruvian Police.
Castillo has already been transferred to the Barbadillo prison, where former president Alberto Fujimori is being held, who is serving a 25-year prison sentence.
The one who was vice president of Castillo, Dina Boluarte, has temporarily assumed the head of state after being sworn in before Congress, thus becoming the first woman president of the country. EFE
