The United Kingdom will open its coronavirus vaccination for children between 5 and 11 years oldannounced this Wednesday the regional governments, which has powers in the field of health.
Following the announcement made by Wales on Tuesday, England, Scotland and Northern Ireland reported expanding their vaccination programs to that age group, for which the British medicines regulator, the MHRA, approved the Pfizer vaccine at the end of December.
Children from 5 to 11 years old will be able to receive the injection from April with the aim of “increasing protection against possible future waves of Covid-19 while we learn to live with the virus,” said the British Minister for Health, Sajid Javid, responsible for these decisions for England.
“Children with no underlying health problems are at low risk of severe illness from Covid-19 and the priority remains for the NHS to deliver vaccines and boosters to vulnerable adults and young people,” he stressed.
One of the countries hardest hit by the pandemicWith 160,000 deaths, the UK began its vaccination campaign in December 2020. Since then, 91.3% of the population over the age of 12 have received a first dose, 85% a second and 66% a booster, according to the latest official figures released on Wednesday.
