In a special session held in Sucre as a tribute to the Bicentennial of Bolivia, the Plenary Chamber of the Supreme Electoral Court (TSE) ratified the date of August 12 for the second and last presidential debate, that will take place in the city of La Paz. The decision was made after evaluating logistics aspects and the commitments previously assumed with the television chains that will transmit the event.
The debate, organized in conjunction with the Confederation of Private Entrepreneurs of Bolivia (CEPB) and the National Association of Journalists of Bolivia (ANPB), was initially questioned by two political alliances – book and unity – that They requested to advance the date to August 10 due to its coincidence with the official electoral campaign closure.
“We are going to see if we can operate that change,” said the president in the exercise of the TSE, Óscar Hassenteufel, at the beginning of the deliberations developed on Tuesday in Facilities of Sereci Chuquisaca, in the historical capital of the country. During the meeting, key aspects for the development of the general elections of August 17 were also addressed, in a political context marked by tensions and expectations about democratic transparency and participation.
Hasenteufel highlighted the relevance of presidential debates in the current electoral process: “They allow citizens to know closely the proposals of the candidates. And the candidates also come good because it allows them to approach people.”
However, he recalled that participation is not mandatory, because the Legislative Assembly did not approve the bill that sought to establish this mandatory. The August 12 debate will address the issues related to the economy, a crucial aspect for the future of the country.
