The truth behind the wedding with a reptile

Witnessing a wedding where the bride is nothing less than a female lizard is not an everyday thing for the rest of the world, but in San Pedro Huamelula there is an explanation and it takes place every year during the festival of San Pedro Apóstol and is part of the traditions of the Chontal people.

The ceremony belongs to an indigenous tradition that is more than 200 years old and is done as a prayer to ask for the generosity of nature and ensure abundance in their community.

In this way, Víctor Hugo Sosa joined the wishes of the residents to bring luck to the fishermen and other members of the town.

Hours before the wedding, the lizard princess Alicia Rubí was baptized and taken to visit the houses of some dance groups in the municipality. In addition, as part of the ritual, the animal arrived at the mayor’s home in the arms of its owners wearing a typical dress of the region and a multi-colored flower headdress.

“Princess Mareña Alicia Rubí accompanied by her parents visiting her future husband”, could be read on the official Facebook account of the San Pedro Huamelula City Council.
