The history of football is full of curiosities that transcend sports to become identity and fraternity symbols. In Paraguay, a country with a rich football tradition, there is a team that not only represents its local community, but also carries a tribute to another nation: Colombia.
That team is the Sport Colombiaa club founded in 1924 as an act of recognition and gratitude to the South American country that showed its solidarity with Paraguay during one of the darkest periods in its history, the Triple Alliance War.
A tribute born from history
The Triple Alliance War (1865-1870) was a devastating conflict for Paraguay, which faced a coalition formed by Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay.
During this period, Colombia distinguished itself for being the only nation in Latin America that supported Paraguay. From his diplomacy, he expressed his rejection of the conflict and approved a law giving Colombian citizenship to the Guarani, in a symbolic gesture of brotherhood.
Decades later, in 1924, that feeling of gratitude materialized in the creation of Sport Colombia, a team founded by fans in the city of San Lorenzo, near Asunción, and who later moved to Fernando de la Mora.
Its name and its colors – yellow camiseta with red stripes and blue pants – are a direct tribute to the Colombian flag.
The ups and downs of a club with history
Sport Colombia found its place in the ascent divisions of Paraguayan football, shaping a combative and humble identity. His first great achievement was the title of the Second Division in 1940, which marked a brief ascent to the highest category.
However, the club had difficulty staying in the elite, and its last participation in the First Division occurred in 2010.
Throughout its history, the team has seen great names of Paraguayan football that shone internationally, such as Paulo da Silva, Víctor Ayala, Nelson “Pipino” Cuevas and Marcelo Estigarribia.
But Sport Colombia has not been exempt from problems. In recent years, the club faced economic crises and internal conflicts, reaching the point of starting a tournament with two different templates due to disputes in its leadership.
Currently, the team competes in the third division of Paraguayan football and faces the challenge of recovering its place in the intermediate, the second category.
Its stadium, Alfonso Colman, with capacity for 7,000 spectators, reflects a difficult present: stands are usually empty, and the support of the fans has been significantly reduced.
A link that transcends football
Beyond sports results, Sport Colombia is a reminder of how football can be a bridge between nations. Although its days of glory seem distant, the team remains a symbol of fraternity between Paraguay and Colombia, a connection that goes back to one of the most critical moments in Latin American history.
