Universities warn of cuts
Before the error was reported, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and the Metropolitan Autonomous University (UAM) assured that the reduction in their budget would affect thousands of students in 2025.
The highest house of studies indicated that a sustained investment is required to care for 373 thousand students, for infrastructure, for the updating of academic programs and for the development of research and the dissemination of culture.
”Such reduction to our budget would directly impact nearly 110,000 students from homes with high economic vulnerability, who are supported every year with some type of scholarship,” he stated.
UNAM pointed out that for at least a decade, it has implemented austerity and rational use of resources programs.
”We agree with Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum that we could be more efficient in spending and, as always, punctual in transparency and accountability,” he noted.
For its part, the UAM indicated that its budget will be reduced by 14% compared to what it had in 2024, the last year of Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s six-year term.
”This means the de facto disappearance of the Elisa Acuña scholarship program for 16 thousand members of our students, the impossibility of completing works started this year, as well as a real and significant drop in the amount allocated to the payment of staff salaries academic and administrative,” he explained.
Nearly 61 thousand students are part of the community at the UAM.
The institution requested that Congress reconsider adjusting the amounts for autonomous universities.
