More than 20 years ago, sloths rescued from a road were brought to the main park in the municipality of Sasaima, Cundinamarca. This park, located just in front of the San Nicolás Church, became the new home of these animals, becoming a tourist attraction for locals and visitors. Over time, the bears reproduced and became an emblematic part of the urban landscape of Sasaima.

According to Sasaima Tour, the first sloth arrived at the park in 2000, after being rescued on the road to Alto de San Vicente. Over the years, the number of sloths grew, reaching more than ten at its peak. These animals became a symbol of the community, visible in each of the park’s trees and creating a special bond with the residents and tourists who frequented the place.

Sloths relocated to another area
Recently, local authorities decided to move the bears to an environment more suitable for their well-being. Carlos Rubio, municipal ombudsman of Sasaima, explained to Canal Capital that “they are releasing the bears in a more natural place.” This decision came after several worrying incidents: one of the bears died from eating processed food that tourists had given it, and another specimen ended up stolen from the park.
The new home of the specimens is the Longitudinal Park of the municipality, an area that offers greater forest cover and an environment closer to their natural habitat.
“This measure was taken with the greater well-being of these animals in mind, where they will find greater forest cover and will have the monitoring of the municipal administration and technical assistance and medical-veterinary assessment by the Corporation,” said Gratiniano Suárez, regional director of the CAR Gualivá.
