The cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment severely undermined the health of the opponents who were imprisoned for expressing themselves freely in a country that is ruled with an iron fist by a dictatorial couple.

The most recent case was registered on February 12, 2022. Retired general Hugo Torres Jiménez died for unknown reasons in the custody of the Police of the Ortega-Murillo regime.

Torres was captured on June 13, 2021 at his home. He was detained for 244 days, on December 17, 2021 he would have been transferred to a hospital in Managua due to his worsening health. His family accompanied him in the last two months of his life.

Since his capture and raid on his home, the former guerrilla and member of the Unión Democrática Renovadora (Unamos) was held in the Directorate of Judicial Assistance, known as “El Chipote”. He was charged with the alleged crime of “conspiracy to undermine national integrity.”

The protesting political prisoners point to a custodian of the Penitentiary System as the person responsible for the crime that ended the life of Montes Praslin. The death of the prisoner of conscience remains unpunished. The prison authorities, much less the Daniel Ortega regime, have never carried out any investigation to clarify the crime and punish the person responsible.

Santos Sebastián Flores Castillo died on November 8, 2021 while he was being held in the Jorge Navarro National Penitentiary System (SPN) in Tipitapa. Flores denounced the alleged rape of his 15-year-old sister by dictator Daniel Ortega.

The 52-year-old man died in prison where he had been detained since 2013 for alleged aggravated rape against an official of the Nicaraguan Judiciary, with whom Flores would have had an affair. Given this, he was found guilty and sentenced to fifteen years in prison by officials of the regime.

Flores was imprisoned in Gallery 300, a maximum security facility, where he was kept completely incommunicado and subjected to exceptionally serious disciplinary procedures that could be classified as torture.
