Waiting for the repair of the Farc and a kidney transplant, this is how one of the most recognized icons of the armed conflict in this country died, the teacher Gustavo Guillermo Moncayo.

And it is that the fight for the liberation of his son, led him to carry out a series of walks to fight for the kidnapped.

It was precisely the 2007 march that made him famous, not only because the media covered each mishap, but also because during those 46 days the conflict intensified.

For that date, he demanded the release of Pablo, his son; who had been chained, was 18 years old and was serving in the military. The only thing he longed for was the reunion.

For this reason, he decided to embark on a journey and his purpose was to insist on an exchange proposed by the Farc to release several guerrillas in exchange for the release of 59 people: 42 military and police officers, 13 politicians and four foreigners.

It is estimated that on the way, more than 500,000 people accompanied him at times until they reached the country’s capital.

Finally, in an operation called “Libertad”, Pablo Emilio Moncayo managed to reunite with his loved ones at the age of 30, after spending 12 of them deep in the Colombian jungle.

Now, when he was still in the fight for a complete peace process, that the victims received the due reparation, “the walker for peace” as he was also known, could not take it anymore and died at the age of 69.

expected transplant

Relatives pointed out that Professor Moncayo was waiting for financial compensation to pay for his treatment and facilitate an eventual transplant.

On October 24, the state of health of the walker Moncayo was known. Since then he decided to return from Canada to Colombia for his medical treatment.

“It is impossible for us as victims to be able to rebuild our life project with symbolic reparations. The FARC have the capacity to do it and we are demanding it, we need a transplant for my father, who is in danger of death”, said Yuri Moncayo, the teacher’s daughter.

The family was in Canada, because they had to take refuge in another place, after threats.
