The “Table of Those Who Wait” for its political prisoners mobilizes the Venezuelan diaspora

Presos políticos protesta mesa de los que esperan

The “Table of those who wait”, convened by the Committee for the Freedom of Political Prisoners, was replicated in Madrid (Spain), Buenos Aires (Argentina), Cúcuta (Colombia), Quito (Ecuador), Utrecht (Netherlands) and in different parts of the United States (Washington DC, Miami, Missouri and Tampa)

The Venezuelan diaspora mobilized this Sunday, December 20, in several countries for the freedom of political prisoners. With long tables, Christmas decorations and photos with the names of the detainees, they symbolized the families waiting to have their loved ones back in their homes during the holidays.

The activity, baptized as “Table of those who wait”, was convened by the Committee for the Freedom of Political Prisoners in Madrid (Spain), Buenos Aires (Argentina), Cúcuta (Colombia), Quito (Ecuador), Utrecht (Netherlands) and in different parts of the United States (Washington DC, Miami, Missouri and Tampa).

In Madrid, citizens and activists set up their table on Paseo de la Castellana to “make visible again our relatives who are in detention centers in Venezuela for political reasons.”

María Laura Márquez highlighted that not only are political leaders imprisoned in prisons, but “there are also many members of civil society”, businessmen or people who protested the 2024 presidential elections.

There are also “relatives of political leaders who have been arrested to exert pressure on all of us who have raised our voices against the (Nicolás) Maduro regime,” he added.

The Committee stood out that some 20 Spanish nationals or citizens with dual nationality remain detained in Venezuela. “Although Spanish authorities have reported on efforts to achieve his release, pointing out diplomatic limitations in the country, so far these efforts have been limited.”

In Buenos Aires, in Parque 3 de Febrero, there was also a table with letters and messages for political prisoners.

The president of Alianza por Venezuela, Liset Luque, stated that “the Table of Those Who Wait is a reminder that the Venezuelan regime uses persecution and repression as a tool of political control. We are not talking about numbers, but about people, about lives suspended. “Freedom is a human right and can no longer be negotiable.”

María Alexandra Gómez, partner of the Argentine gendarme Nahuel Gallo, who has been detained in Venezuela for more than a year, also spoke at the activity.

«The absence is felt every day, but on dates like Christmas it hurts twice as much. Behind every political prisoner there are families who wait, who resist and who do not lose hope of hugging each other again,” said Gómez.

Relatives of Colombians detained in the country also gathered in Cúcuta and asked for a “Christmas without political prisoners.”

At least a dozen Colombians are detained in Venezuela under various accusations, most of them for alleged terrorism. The Colombian Foreign Ministry has held various meetings with the Venezuelan Ministry of Foreign Affairs to achieve their releases, but has not achieved the definitive release of all its citizens.

*Journalism in Venezuela is carried out in a hostile environment for the press with dozens of legal instruments in place to punish the word, especially the laws “against hate”, “against fascism” and “against the blockade.” This content was written taking into consideration the threats and limits that, consequently, have been imposed on the dissemination of information from within the country.
