By then, Mario Aburto had already served 30 years in prison. If the rule established by the Baja California Penal Code of 1994 is finally applied, he may be released, since that penalty would be sufficient for the crime committed.
Aburto Martínez, originally from Zamora, Michoacán, is 53 years old. He was arrested on March 23, 1994 in Lomas Taurinas, Tijuana, shortly after murdering Colosio, during a rally in which the presidential candidate was attacked with two shots, one in the head and another in the abdomen, which caused his death a few hours later.
Aburto, who at the time was 23 years old and worked as a maintenance assistant at Audiomatic, was arrested at the scene. Currently, his entire family resides in the United States, where they were granted asylum due to the risk they ran in Mexico.
