In the midst of the new coronavirus pandemic, the supermarket sector was the biggest generator of jobs in the country, with 156,120 new jobs created, with 57,214 new jobs in 2020 and 98,906 in 2021. Economist Guilherme Mercês, one of the founding partners of Future Tank, told Brazil Agency, which in relative terms, considering the total number of jobs created in the states, Rio de Janeiro held the largest share of the supermarket sector in the supply of new jobs in the last two years, with 11,120 new jobs (41% of the total) , accounting for two out of every five jobs opened in Rio de Janeiro. In 2020, 2,483 vacancies were created and, in the following year, 8,637.

The supermarket sector generated the most jobs in seven other Brazilian states during the pandemic: Piauí (21%), with 3,504 jobs; Rondônia (13%), with 1,838; Maranhão (12%), with 6,860; Amazonas (11%), with 4,774; Pará (11%), with 10,819; Pernambuco (8%), with 6,377; and Ceará (7%), with 6,495 jobs.

Emphasis

According to the economist, the supermarket sector was the highlight in the pandemic, in 2020 and 2021 combined, because “it was the great resistance of employment and income. In 2020, while most sectors laid off, the supermarket sector hired. In 2021, he repeated that performance and signed again.”

Supermarkets were among the ten sectors that most generate jobs in 57 of the 92 cities in Rio de Janeiro, in the last two years. They led the hiring in the metropolitan (7,731) and mountain regions (621). The sector was also the first contractor in terms of municipalities, with 3,032 new jobs in the state capital; 1,276, in São Gonçalo; 854, in Nova Iguaçu; 459, in São João de Meriti; 427, in Petropolis; 419, in Teresopolis.

Cargo transport

The second largest job-generating sector in 2020 and 2021 was road freight transport, with 136,423 new jobs. “The pandemic scenario has led people to be more locked at home and the demand for delivery logistics has increased a lot,” said Mercês.

The survey also highlights that supermarkets are among the ten largest generators of vacancies in all states of the country. In absolute terms, the champions of ranking in 2020 and 2021 they were São Paulo, with 30,989 jobs created; Minas Gerais (17,511); Rio de Janeiro (11,120): Pará (10,819); and Rio Grande do Sul (9,757).

The study was based on official data from Novo Caged, which generates formal employment statistics using information collected from the eSocial systems, the General Registry of Employed and Unemployed systems (Caged) and Empregador Web.

The president of Asserj, Fábio Queiróz, said that the supermarket sector had a “fundamental social and economic role in the pandemic, not only for its function of supplying the population, but also for having been one of the pillars in terms of generating employment and income in Brazil, mainly in the state of Rio de Janeiro”.

Fábio Queiróz believes that the supermarket sector will continue to contribute to the economic and social development of the states. He said that a proof is the realization, by Asserj and Base Promoções, of the 32nd Super Rio Expofood, opened today (21) in Riocentro, which is generating around 8 thousand direct and indirect jobs. The fair is considered the best event in the sector in Latin America and marks the resumption of business fairs in Brazil, with the presence of more than 500 exhibitors.

The fair will run until the 23rd. In this edition, Super Rio Expofood will have, for the first time in its history, a space dedicated to international business, the IMex Trade, whose objective is to lead retail in Rio de Janeiro to increase its business in the world market. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about market launches, financial solutions and technological trends for the category.
