Matienzo Puerto believes that there were several reasons that prompted the Cuban regime to prevent his participation and that of other Cuban activists in an event of such magnitude.
“The first, and I think it is the most important, is that we are voices that totally disagree with the official discourse. The second, which is a bit more petty, is because they have already been officially excluded from the Summit of the Americas”, he stated.
Likewise, the journalist assured that it is the first time that the regime has prevented her from attending an event. “I went light to the Summit of the Americas (which was held) in Panama thinking that they were not going to let me out, and they did let me,” she recalled.
“I think the circumstances and context were different: Raúl Castro was there (at the head of the Cuban regime) and he had been invited to the Summit for the first time, after not attending for a long time,” he specified.
Matienzo Puerto also explained that she had been invited to a space where the issue of freedom of expression in art and from feminism would be discussed.
“The idea was for me to talk about freedom of expression and feminism. I was going to speak from my experience, about how feminism has evolved in recent years, in order to unite and solidify discourses that have to do with the political violence that many women experience, ”she said.
