In front of representatives of the three powers of the Union, the president of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN), Hugo Aguilar Ortiz, yesterday gave a report on the first 100 days of work of the new highest court in the country.
He affirmed that the stage of a “slow, stagnant, self-absorbed and even arrogant Court” was reversed, and defended that it now acts with judicial independence, “without subordination”, with austerity and “closer to reality and to the people of Mexico.”
He assured that he has now established respectful cooperation with economic sectors, local authorities and international organizations, which strengthens democratic governance and effective compliance with sentences. However, he emphasized that “it does not bow to any agenda outside the constitutional framework” nor does it respond to particular interests.
“In this period we have promoted and guaranteed full judicial independence, as well as adequate and respectful links with the other powers. Today there is constant and mature dialogue between the powers of the Union; there is no submission or subordination, but rather institutional co-responsibility and respect for the powers of each one.
“In these first months we have made it clear that the Supreme Court maintains its institutional responsibility firmly, it does not respond to particular interests, it does not adjust to current pressures, it does not allow the political climate of the moment to distort its role nor does it bow to any agenda outside the constitutional framework,” he stressed.
Regarding the austerity policy, he said that the new plenary session reviewed internal practices and eliminated privileges enjoyed by previous ministers, which is why he announced that for fiscal year 2026 the additional 661 million pesos requested from Congress by his predecessor, Norma Piña Hernández, will not be necessary.
“Do more with the same resources that have been assigned to us. During 2026 we will continue to adjust and make the work in the Court more efficient; we are determined that everyone adjust their perceptions to the constitutional and legal mandate, that privileges never return and that this court is an example of work, efficiency, austerity, honesty and transparency,” he said.
Present at the event were the head of the Ministry of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodríguez Velázquez, representing President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, and the new Attorney General of the Republic, Ernestina Godoy.
Also attending were the Head of Government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada; the head of the National Conference of Governors and president of Baja California, Marina del Pilar Olmedo; the president of the Senate of the Republic, Laura Itzel Castillo (Morena), and the vice president of the Chamber of Deputies, Sergio Gutiérrez Luna, also a Morena member.
According to the Court’s social communications office, the president of the lower house, PAN member Kenia López Rabadán, was invited, but did not attend due to a personal agenda.
In addition, the majority of the members of the Judicial Administration Body and the Judicial and Electoral Disciplinary Courts of the Judicial Branch of the Federation, and members of government institutions, were present.
In his report, Aguilar Ortiz presented the 10 pillars of the new SCJN: transformative justice, transparent, close to the people, humanistic, multicultural, with a gender perspective, independent, austere, digital and oriented toward “real and true” justice focused on social impact.
