Carlos Sauradirector of Breeding ravens (1975), Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival that year, has died.
Antonio Saura, a film producer and the second of his seven children, assured that his father was “a huge filmmaker who explored everything and until the last moment.”
Antonio will collect the Goya de Honor in his father’s name at the Andalusia Auditorium in Seville. He will do it together with his little sister Anna, at the express wish of the director of “La caza” or “La cousin Angelica” s.
“He asked us to have Eulalia (Ramón, his partner), I don’t know if she will finally be there, I hope so, along with my sister Anna, the youngest, and I, who am the second oldest, because my brother Carlos is very shy.” , has said.
As he explained, his father was “very bad” since the end of December.
“Last week they told us that he might not make it past the weekend, and even so we saw him resist because my father was a true titan and his brain worked very well until the last moment,” he said.
Carlos Saura’s health deteriorated as a result of a fall he suffered last September. This prevented him from going to the San Sebastian Festival to present his latest film, the documentary “The walls speak”, added, according to his son, to a degenerative disease.
«It has ended now, almost better one day before the Goya; at least she has had the prudence not to embitter the gala », she has pointed out.
The documentary explores the relationship between rock art and contemporary urban art and was released last Friday in movie theaters.
“The best tribute that can be paid to him is to go see him,” he pointed out, “although it had not been thought of that way, it is a precious testament that reflects on the impulse to create.”
«My father was in love with all forms of culture and the one who has taken Spanish culture around the world the most, his passion for flamenco, the jota, dance or dance, all music and his reflection on reality», he has extolled, recognizing himself as “the son who drools” when talking about his father.
For Antonio Saura, who produced the film “Fados” (2007), the most important thing about his legacy is “his commitment to extreme quality and not doing anything against his principles”, something not so easy to find, he has assured , with a career of more than 50 titles.
Although it will be difficult to celebrate the Goya in his absence, his wish is that the gala not be overshadowed.
“It’s a movie festival and my father was a movie man, and many of the people nominated represent a movie model that he was very proud of,” his son said.
And he added: “I think that what it has to be is a celebration of cinema.”
