The Spanish company World2Fly cancels one of its two weekly flights to Cuba

Havana/The Spanish airline World2Fly announced this Friday that it will suspend, from March 15 to July 5, one of its two weekly flights between Madrid and Havana.

The reason given by the company, which belongs to the Iberostar Group, according to the EFE agency, It’s the same one he’s wearing to many other companies that have been forced to suspend or reduce their operations after the capture of Nicolás Maduro by the United States, on January 3, and the ban on sending Venezuelan oil to Cuba. By extending this ban to other countries, such as Mexico, under the threat of imposing tariffs, the island’s airports have run out of kerosene to refuel planes.

For the moment, the Spanish airline will maintain its Wednesday flight, although, like Iberia and Air Europa, it has made, since February 11, a refueling stop in the Dominican Republic on flights returning to Madrid.

At the same time, this Thursday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada, Anita Anand, announced the end of repatriation operations for more than 27,900 travelers who were stranded in Cuba, after Air Canada announced the suspension of its flights. To the rest of his compatriots who still remain on the Island, he urged them to “leave the country through the commercial airlines that still continue to operate, while options exist.”

Canada, the main source of tourists to the Island, has published an alert to all its citizens to discourage them from traveling to the Island.

Canada, main source of tourists to the Islandhas also published an alert to all its citizens to discourage them from traveling to the Island due to the deterioration of living conditions in the country. Along the same lines, Norway issued a statement this Friday in which it advises its citizens against making trips to Cuba “that are not essential.”

For its part, Russia, another of the main countries of origin for tourists – only behind Canada and Cubans residing abroad – also announced on February 12 the gradual repatriation of some 4,000 citizens, following the decision of the Rossiya airline, belonging to the Aeroflot groupto cancel their flights to Cuba. In 2024, faced with a similar kerosene crisis, the Russian company had maintained its frequencies to the Island by adding a technical stop in Caracas, an alternative that, in the current sociopolitical context, is no longer viable.

Cuba closed the year with catastrophic data in the tourism sector, its third source of income, behind the sale of medical services and remittances. In 2025 it received 1,810,663 international visitors, far from what was planned a year ago (2.6 million) and from the results of 2017 and 2018, when it received more than four million tourists.
