The Spanish Beñat San José Gil stopped being the coach of the Mexican soccer Atlas this Monday after the team’s participation in the Apertura 2024 tournament.

“Atlas FC and Beñat San José have agreed to terminate the contractual relationship that both had. Atlas FC appreciates the professionalism, work and commitment shown by him and his coaching staff in this stage at the head of the Zorros. Likewise, it wishes them the greatest of success in their next professional challenges,” the team wrote in a statement.

The one born in San Sebastián spent two tournaments leading the red and black team.

In the first, Clausura 2024, he led his team to finish in 17th position among 18 teams. They added 14 points from three wins, five draws and nine losses.

In the regular phase of the Apertura that concluded a few weeks ago, he guided Atlas to 10th position in the regular phase, which ended with 22 points, with five wins, seven draws and five losses.

In the playoffs they beat Guadalajara, but were then eliminated by Tijuana, a defeat that marginalized them from the quarterfinals, which ultimately determined their separation from the team.

The 45-year-old coach began his career on the bench with Al-Ittihad of Saudi Arabia in 2012.

In South America he directed Deportes Antofagasta and the Universidad Católica de Chile, and the Bolivian Bolívar in two stages. In Europe he had experience with KAS Eupen of the Belgian first division.

Before leading Atlas in Mexico, Beñat San José sat on the Mazatlán FC bench in the Apertura 2021 and Clausura 2022.

Atlas is a team founded in 1916. Throughout its more than 100 years of history it has been league champion three times.

In its squad it has figures such as the Colombian goalkeeper Camilo Vargas, selected by his country, his compatriot Mauro Manotas and the Uruguayan Brian Lozano.

The so-called Zorros will begin their preseason next Thursday ahead of their participation in the Clausura 2025 tournament for which they have not yet defined their new coach.
