This, because according to the study, the cost of disability severe in the affected population (families with someone with disability) was 0.04% of GDP added to the impact of the cost for the country, which was calculated at 0.06% of said GDP.

The data is contained in the study “Costs of Disability: Effects on Quality of Life and Income”, prepared by the siuben. To calculate the impact of this cost on the economy Dominican Republic, the 2018 GDP data calculated by the Central Bank equivalent to RD$4,235,846.8 million were used.

“A first approximation to the aggregate cost of the disability severe is obtained by multiplying this annual opportunity cost by the number of people who suffer from this type of disability registered in our database (60.5% of the Dominican population in 2018 was in the siuben). This product is equivalent to 1,704,034,800 pesos. This amount is the aggregate opportunity cost of the disability severe in the population raised by siuben in 2018,” the study says.

The number of people with disability severe in the database of the siuben it was 32,976; while the total population of the database of siuben there were 6,380,843 people and the estimated Dominican population in 2018 was 10,266,149.

Based on these data, the estimated number of people with disability severe in the general population is 53,055 people. By multiplying this estimated amount by the previously calculated annual opportunity cost per individual, it is obtained that the aggregate cost of the disability severe in 2018 estimated for the general population was 2,741,624,446 pesos.

Of a total of 22,109 people with disability severe, with identity cards of legal age, only 7.3% were contributing to Social Security at the time of the interview. On the contrary, within the 3,215,446 people, the group without any disability and senior citizen ID, 22.8% was contributing to the SDSS at the time of the interview.
