Madrid Spain.- The lack of resources and medicines in hospitals makes the dengue crisis in Cuba increasingly difficult to control.
According to statements to Radio Television Marti of doctors in Santiago de Cuba, the situation is chaotic and “has gotten out of hand.”
“Here there are no resources of any kind. Here there is no ambulance system to transport patients to the city of Santiago de Cuba. There is only one ambulance for the entire municipality. There are no medications. The situation is already critical,” said Dr. Roberto Serrano, from Songo la Maya.
Serrano also assured that in that region several people have died from hemorrhagic dengue.
For her part, intensive care nurse Niurka Carmona, from Palma Soriano, explained that before the collapse of the Ambrosio Grillo Surgical Clinic hospital, two schools had to be set up to care for patients.
Regarding the drug crisis, Carmona pointed out that there is “neither an antihistamine, nor a dipyrone.”
Regarding the necessary hygiene to avoid the reproduction of the disease-transmitting mosquito, he explained that the streets are overflowing with garbage because there is no fuel for the transport in charge of collecting it.
Last week the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) reported that a increase in cases of dengue for the months of October and November on the Island.
According to Clarilda Peña García, deputy minister of MINSAP, the country is going through “a difficult moment”, and “we are heading towards the most complex of the disease, since the cycle shows its greatest peaks from the end of October and the beginning of November, because there are a wave of the vector and of the patients with dengue”.
According to health authorities, there is currently a presence of dengue transmission in 14 provinces, 41 municipalities, and 58 health areas in the country; the provinces with the highest incidence rates being Santiago de Cuba, Havana, Las Tunas, Guantánamo, Camagüey, Matanzas and the special municipality of Isla de la Juventud.
