After the officer’s murder, Jan remains at the San Calixto police station, unable to understand that his ‘father’ will not return.

News Colombia.

The story of Jan, a faithful dog that belonged to Second Lieutenant Anderson Yassing Gómez Posada, reflects one of the many silent tragedies left by the armed conflict in Colombia.

Jan, who accompanied the officer since his days at the Police Cadet School, is still waiting for his ‘father’ to return at the San Calixto police station, Norte de Santander. But that day will never come.

Second Lieutenant Gómez Posada was brutally murdered last Tuesday, when snipers from the National Liberation Army (ELN) attacked him while he was carrying out his duty.

He received several gunshot wounds, and although he was taken to a hospital, the wounds were fatal. His loss left a void not only in his family and companions, but also in his inseparable canine companion, Jan.

The officer’s colleagues describe Jan as more than just a pet: he was a member of the station, a constant presence who brought joy in the midst of police routine.

Since he arrived with Gómez Posada, Jan became an integral part of the group, always showing his loyalty to the second lieutenant, who treated him like his own son.

Jan’s pain

The officer’s death has left Jan devastated. Since the fateful day when his owner did not return to the station, the dog has remained in the bed he shared with him, waiting patiently.

The agents who still remain at the station say that Jan refuses to eat, his eyes are sad and his body is dejected by obvious grief. He cries silently, as if he understood that something terrible has happened, but without the ability to assimilate that his ‘dad’ will not return.

This silent act of loyalty has deeply moved the second lieutenant’s colleagues, who recognize in Jan the living testimony of the devastating impact of violence in this country.

“It’s heartbreaking to see how Jan is still waiting,” says one of the officers. «He was his shadow, his friend, his son. Seeing him like this, so broken, is like feeling the loss of our partner again and again.

Jan’s future is uncertain. Some officers have begun to organize to find him a worthy home, aware that Gómez Posada would have wanted his faithful companion to have the best possible fate. However, for Jan, the world has become an empty place, an existence marked by eternal waiting.
