In order to continue promoting reading in the country, the Ministry of Public Education (SEP) announced the new stage of the National Reading Strategy 2024-2030 called Marathons for Reading.
At the 63 Melchor Ocampo Technical Secondary School, in Mexico City, the Secretary of Public Education, Mario Delgado Carrillo, the head of the Federal Educational Authority in Mexico City, Luciano Concheiro, and the director of that school, Lucía Arteaga González, gave the start to this new stage, in the context of the commemoration of the Mexican Revolution.
Delgado highlighted that this government will continue to promote reading, since in the SEP We believe in horizontal, collective readings that help us awaken consciousness
. For this reason, this stage is called Reading Marathons, since, he noted, they are invitations to read collectively on important dates for Mexicans.
Different institutions at all levels will participate, both basic and upper secondary education, in conjunction with the initiatives of the Economic Culture Fund (FCE). Participation in reading will be encouraged through these marathons, in which Mexicans of all ages will be invited to read books, essays, chronicles, articles, among others, related to the commemoration.
The first marathon of this strategy occurred on the anniversary of the Mexican Revolution; In this regard, the official highlighted the importance of this historical fact, since the right to education was enshrined in the Constitution as a result of the revolution and the SEP itself is also a product of that struggle.
Furthermore, he pointed out that the book The presidential successionwritten by Francisco I. Madero, was the trigger for that fight, since its message reached the people; Therefore, he asserted that reading can change realities.
A reading person cannot be considered as such without a bond with another, reading helps you understand the reality of others and feel empathy, we read to tell others what we read, the experience we felt when we read.
he stated.
In the previous six-year period, with the National Reading Strategy, the FCE increased the number of rooms for this activity in the country, going from 3,785 in 2019 to 5,494 this year, and reduced the cost by up to 70 percent. of around a thousand books in its catalogue.
For their part, the educational authorities selected 32 titles for the Libros del Rincón collection at the preschool level with a printing of 2 million 560 thousand copies (80 thousand per title).
