The Chamber of Senators will discuss tomorrow Tuesday, in the last session of 2022, the Cercanías Train project. The initiative had already been approved in general by the Upper House on December 1, but its treatment in particular had to be given on December 13, a fact that finally did not occur.
Lauro Ramírez, president of Ferrocarriles del Paraguay SA (Fepasa), warned that if this continues to be delayed, unfortunately, the proposal will be lost.
“They have been working on this project for more than 10 years and presented it more than a year ago. They presented a proposal to design, finance, build, operate and maintain a train for 30 years. And apart from transferring technology, setting up an integration center, carrying out a study on the integration of modes of transport, making donations of around US$ 50 million. They propose that to us and we haven’t answered yes or no for a year,” he commented.
The project will require an investment of close to US$500 million initially and will reach US$1.8 billion in 30 years. The collection, in turn, will be around US$ 1,950 million in that period of time. It will provide labor to around 20,000 people, all compatriots.
