Yesterday the Senate opened the process for the appointment of 15 electoral magistrates in 13 states of the Republic, whose positions are vacant due to resignations, because they assumed another position for which they were elected in the last judicial elections in June and, even, one of them was removed for being subject to criminal proceedings.

The plenary session of the Upper House must appoint, by qualified majority, those who occupy the pending magistrates, otherwise they would have to wait until the next judicial election in 2027.

In the electoral courts of Baja California, Chiapas, Coahuila, Durango, Guerrero, Morelos, Oaxaca, Puebla, Tlaxcala, Veracruz and Zacatecas, one electoral magistrate will be appointed, while there will be three in Tamaulipas and two in Sinaloa.

The board of directors, chaired by Laura Itzel Castillo, yesterday issued the call for the registration of candidates, which will be open from the 27th to the 31st of this month.

It establishes the deadlines and procedure to compete, proposed by the Political Coordination Board (Jucopo), a body that will review the documentation that the candidates present and will send to the Justice Commission the list of those who submitted their papers in order.

The Justice Commission will agree on the format and will hold appearances to analyze the candidacies from November 10 to 14 and present the opinion to the Jucopo with those who are eligible.

Among the places to be filled, one of the Tamaulipas Electoral Tribunal stands out, vacant since November 22, 2024, after the local Congress gave its approval to criminally proceed against Judge Edgar Danés Rojas.

Likewise, they will be competing in the positions of magistrates Gilberto de Guzmán Bátiz García, Ixel Mendoza Aragón and Sergio Rendón, in Chiapas, Morelos and Coahuila, since they were elected in June for other judicial positions and protested on September 1.
