The Senate of the Nation will resume parliamentary activity this week, after the two-week winter recess, with the convening of several committee meetings and the visit of a minister from the national cabinet who will provide a report on the progress of his portfolio.

The planned activities were officially announced and, as first matterthe members of the Internal Security and Drug Trafficking Commission will receive the Minister of Security, Aníbal Fernández.

Tuesday

The meeting will take place next Tuesday, August 2, from 3:00 p.m. in the Arturo Illia Hall of the Upper House.

The meeting will serve for Fernández to expand on issues related to the portfolio that he heads in the national government since September 20 of last year.

Fernández’s presence began to take shape during the meeting to establish the Commission, on June 9when the Fuegian official Matías Rodríguez was appointed president of that body.

Two issues appear on the Senate’s parliamentary agenda that will be addressed this week in committee.

Wednesday

One of the initiatives was sent by the Executive Branch in April of last year and aims to modify the Law of Execution of the Deprivation of Liberty Sentence. This issue will be debated in the Committee on Justice and Criminal Affairs on Wednesday, August 3 at 11.

That same day, from four in the afternoon, the Constitutional Affairs Commission will continue with the treatment of three bills (from the Front of All) that seek to modify the mechanism by which popular consultation is called.

Two of them, those of Oscar Parrilli from Neuquén and Juliana Di Tullio from Buenos Aires, have already begun to be discussed. The third, from Jujuy Guillermo Snopek, will be incorporated in this next meeting.

A while before, at 2:30 p.m., the Health Commission of the Upper House is scheduled to meet to discuss two projects that have already been sanctioned by the Chamber of Deputies.

The first of the issues declares June 23 of each year as the National Dravet Syndrome Day, a very severe epileptic encephalopathy that begins in the first year of life.

The second of the topics is linked to the prevention and control of what is usually known as Antimicrobial Resistance.

sessions

Sources from the ruling party, on the other hand, indicated that a session is not scheduled to take place this week, despite the fact that during the last days of June and the first of July an opinion was given to several initiatives that, in principle, were to be debated especially on Thursday, July 7.

That day, the ruling party intended to approve the bill promoted by 16 Peronist governors to expand the number of members of the Supreme Court from five to 25.

However, given the reluctance of Together for Change (JxC) to deal with the issue, the Front of All (FdT) could not gather the necessary number to meet and suspended the parliamentary meeting.

The project was originally going to be debated in plenary this Thursday, July 14.

Two weeks earlier, in the middle of the session, the head of the ruling party senators interblock, José Mayans, anticipated the date change arguing that, before the start of the school winter break, it was going to be difficult to find tickets for the legislators who had to travel from the inside.

The project to modify the number of members of the Court will, in principle, be debated in August, together with several initiatives that have already obtained an opinion in their respective commissions, among them is the agreement to formally appoint 62 judicial officials ( among judges, chambermaids and prosecutors) of the National Justice, as well as the project that has been under review by Deputies on specific assignments for the culture industry.
