The Senate will begin debate on Monday in commission of the project that endorses the agreement that the national government reached with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), approved in the early hours of Friday by the Chamber of Deputiesduring an audience in which the Minister of Economy will present, Martin Guzmanand other officials, and the ruling party hopes to sanction him in the same week.
the chief of staff, John Manzurand Minister Guzmán will appear at 3:00 p.m. before the Budget Commission chaired by the senator of the Frente de Todos (FdT) for La Rioja Richard Warand that will meet in the Blue Room of the Congress.
The head of the ruling bloc, Jose Mayansconfirmed last Friday that he met with the vice president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner and that he received instructions to give “fast treatment“to the text approved by the lower house.
To this meeting are invited, in addition to Manzur and Guzmán, the director of the Central Bank, Miguel Fish, and the director of the General Administration of Public Revenues (AFIP), Mercedes Marco del Pont.
The senator for the FdT paul yedlin estimated that by the “end of the week” to come “the great majority” of the members of the upper house will approve the bill that supports the agreement with the IMF.
“The truth is that we have no choice but to reach an agreement with the IMF. The vast majority are going to accompany the President (Alberto Fernández), we are not going to have big problems,” Yedlin estimated last Friday in statements to FM Milenium.
For the Tucuman legislator, the debate will take place “normally” and he estimated that he does not believe that it will be necessary to “modify the text” because, if it is changed, it should return to the Deputies.
In that sense, he considered that “the new agreement allows us to breathe and sustain the country’s growth in the post-pandemic and strengthen the macroeconomy.”
Likewise, the senator recognized that the division of the vote in the block “is a risk that the FdT runs, after the vote in Deputies”, where he considered that “dialogue was lacking” within the bench.
“It is a great challenge for the bloc to overcome these differences,” said Yedlin, warning those undecided senators that, if the agreement is not voted, Argentina will enter “in default.”
After the approval in Deputies, Mayans explained that according to the Senate regulations and after the issuance of an opinion, seven days should be waited for the call to session, but the intention is to agree between the blocks that the debate takes place before Friday. .
The head of the senators of the FdT explained that the scenario in the Upper House for the discussion of the agreement with the IMF “is very similar” to that of the Deputies, but maintained that the position of the ruling party is to “respect the decision” made by each legislator.
Mayans assured that the treatment in the Senate “will be given immediately” and that his position is that on Tuesday an opinion be issued in committee to “try to give him treatment that same week in the compound“.
Meanwhile, the head of the PRO senators, Humberto Schiavonisaid that “there has been very little communication” and “a lot of secrecy” around the discussion and pointed out that when they wanted to discuss the issue with their peers from the FdT they have “had little echo”.
Schiavoni affirmed that they already have a mandate from the JxC table to vote positively and specified that in the Budget Commission the ruling party has a majority to “make an office the same Tuesday.”
The missionary senator expressed his support for the country not entering into default with the international organization, but anticipated his negative vote on initiatives that involve tax increases.
The Chamber of Deputies approved in the early hours of last Friday the project that supports the agreement with the IMF for the restructuring of the debt contracted by former President Mauricio Macri, after more than 13 hours of debate that ended with the positive vote of 202 legislators, against 37 negatives and 13 abstentions.
Most of the positive votes were contributed by the FdT and JxC benches, to which were added the legislators of the Federal, United Provinces and Ser interblocks.
Among the negatives there were also votes from the FdT, the left and from the self-proclaimed libertarian legislators.
