The seismic alert sounded without tremors in CDMX
According to the Digital Alerting and Comprehensive Risk Management Platform of Mexico (SASSLA), the source of the sound of the Seismic Alert in the capital is currently unknown. In a message through 𝕏, he explained that the Mexican Seismic Alert System (SASMEX) has not been activated since the national drill on September 19, 2025.
Minutes later, the National Seismological Service (SSN) remarked that No relevant earthquake was detected in Mexico that warrants warning.
For its part, the Capital’s Command, Control, Computing, Communications and Citizen Contact Center (C5 CDMX) ruled out that the source of the sound was from its infrastructure.
The Seismological Department does not have the alerts, it only warns when there are tremors
The National Seismological Service (SSN), unlike what many people may think, does not manage the systems to activate the seismic alert in the country. Its job is to record, store and distribute data on seismic movements.
That is, it only performs monitoring.
The SSN is part of the Institute of Geophysics (IGf) of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and has 115 years of operation in the country as one of the most advanced monitoring centers in Latin America, equipped with cutting-edge technology that works 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Its central station is located in Ciudad Universitaria, in Mexico City, and it has the Alternate Monitoring Center, in Pachuca, Hidalgo, and functions as a mirror headquarters to the first.
In addition to this institution, UNAM has more equipment for the study of these natural phenomena such as the Vibrating Table Laboratory, of the Engineering Institute (II).
Who manages the alerts?
The infrastructure and operations are carried out by the Mexican Seismic Alert System (SASMEX). It was initially made up of the Seismic Alert System for Mexico City (SAS), which has been in operation since 1991 and the Seismic Alert System for the City of Oaxaca (SASO), which has provided service since 2003.
Subsequently, SASMEX expanded its coverage to other regions with seismic danger such as Puebla, Michoacán and Guerrero.
The institution is in charge of the Seismic Instrumentation and Registration Center, AC (CIRES), a system considered a pioneer in providing the service of disseminating public alerts for tremors, with the support of the Association of Radio Broadcasters of the Valley of Mexico, AC (ARVM).
Information in development.
